Norway Travel Tips & Essentials

Before we dive into the itinerary, here are some Norway travel tips to make your campervan adventure seamless:

Language & Communication

Norwegian is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas.

A few useful phrases:

  • "Hei" (Hi)

  • "Takk" (Thank you)

  • "Hvor er nærmeste bensinstasjon?" (Where is the nearest petrol station?)

Currency & Payments

Norway uses Norwegian Krone (NOK). Card payments are widely accepted, even for small transactions. Cash is rarely needed, but it’s always good to have a small amount for rural areas.

Toll Roads & Ferries

Norway has an extensive network of toll roads and ferries. Your campervan will be registered automatically, and you’ll receive a bill after your trip. Some ferry routes must be booked in advance—check the Norled and Fjord1 websites for schedules.

Camping & Wild Camping

  • Norway’s Right to Roam (Allemannsretten) allows wild camping, but you must be at least 150m away from private property.

  • Some areas prohibit overnight parking, so check local signs.

  • Many petrol stations have waste disposal facilities for campervans.

Best Time to Visit

  • Summer (June - August): Midnight sun, long days, and pleasant temperatures.

  • Autumn (September - October): Vibrant foliage, fewer crowds.

  • Winter (November - February): Northern Lights, snowy landscapes, but road closures.
